KEITH TRIMPER MEMORIAL PLAYGROUND

KEITH TRIMPER MEMORIAL PLAYGROUND

The playground committee is pleased to announce that the playground build was a success on September 25th! 220 people took time out of their lives to pull together & build a much needed playground for the children of DES, as well as to honour a much loved youth in our community. Keith will always be remembered for his warm and caring heart. He was a faithful friend to many, always smiling and making others laugh. He was a great athlete who enjoyed a variety of sports, with soccer being his favorite. Keith touched many lives with his positive presence, and we are pleased to honor his memory through our school and community project.

We would like thank the donors below for contributing to our project & also to the carpenters who built such a beautiful outdoor classroom for the school.

TRANSFORMATION OF A PLAYGROUND - DAY 5

Today was a challenging day working in the rain, but despite it, we were able to accomplish a lot. All of the pieces that had to be welded are now done & the cement was poured for the swing, as well a few other pieces of equipment. Volunteers will have an assortment of tasks to complete when they come on Saturday, including building a retaining wall, putting together several climbing structures, activity boards, railings & slides.

Hats off to the volunteers that we had today & glad they were able to stay the day, despite the inclement weather!

See you on Saturday!

PS: If you are unable to attend Build Day, go to www.ltbk.ca in the morning & a live broadcast will begin between 8am & 9am.

TRANSORMATION OF A PLAYGROUND - DAY 4

What a day!

After arriving at the playground at 8 am, we started laying out the groundwork for the vertical posts, which the play equipment & platforms mount on. Quite a bit was accomplished & a lot was prepared for the volunteers, who will be arriving on Saturday.

Thanks to all the volunteers that were able to make it today!

TRANSFORMATION OF A PLAYGROUND - DAY 3

Well, the equipment arrived today at lunchtime & needless to say, the kids were very interested & excited about the new play equipment. The concrete arrived as well & the frame of the outdoor classroom was set into it, so building can start first thing Saturday morning.

TRANSFORMATION OF A PLAYGROUND - DAY 2

Today the excavation of the playground was completed & the holes were dug for the bigfoot & sonotubes. In the picture below, you can see the frame placed on the sonotubes. Cement will be delivered on Wednesay, so that there will be enough time for the cement to set before the classroom is built on Saturday. More pictures can be seen on the Facebook page, which is

TRANSFORMATION OF A PLAYROUND - DAY 1

Over the course of this week, the playground at DES will be undergoing a transformation. A picture of the project will be posted each day, so that you can follow the progress. More pictures will be posted on Facebook. Just search for Keith Trimper Memorial Playground.
Don't forget to JOIN THE EFFORT on the right before leaving this webpage!

THE COUNTDOWN IS ON!

It is hard to believe, but in exactly one week, the playground at DES will be undergoing a huge transformation! Also, the outdoor classroom will be built, as well as some gardening around the school.

The walking track portion of our project has been postponed for now, due to the fact that given the enormity of the project, it would be best if we focused on the most important part of the project, which is the playground for the kids. Also, we hope to partner with another organization, so that more funding can be used to develop it into something the whole comunity can use. The lack of availability of a suitable base material for the track was also one of the main reasons for postponing the field as well.

If you have not yet JOINED THE EFFORT, please do by selecting the button on the right. There will be childcare provided from 9am to 3pm & Tim Hortons will be providing coffee & Timbits, as well as some local businesses providing meals for the volunteers.

See you there!!

AUGUST FUNDRAISERS

Beginning in August, the Digby Firehall will donate the proceeds from 4 of their weekly bingos towards our playground. This is a big help towards our playground & we are very thankful they are doing this!

The Learning Grove Childcare Centre recently held a penny drive for our playground. Thank you everyone from Learning Grove!

During Scallop Days, we had a booth set up on Admiral's Walk selling raffle tickets, beverages & freezies, as well as selling freezies at various stations during the parade. We managed to raise $450 for the playground. Thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth that Saturday & a special thanks goes out to our committee members who either contributed for the fundraiser or donated their time to mind the booth or sell freezies during the parade.

Grant Thornton's staff (see pic)held a bbq during the last week in July with the proceeds going to our playground as well. They will also be donating their proceeds from casual days during the rest of the summer. Thanks Grant Thornton!

All of the above are fine examples of how the people of Digby are pulling together to help us with this project. If you would like to help or have an idea on how your business can contribute, please email keithtrimpermemorial@gmail.com or call 245-4240 to speak to Sean or Julie. If you know one of our committee members, you can contact them as well.

Fundraising

As reported in an earlier post, our committee members have started approaching individuals & businesses for donations towards our project. Just in the last 2 weeks, we have managed to collect close to $5,000. Way to go everyone!

While the playground for the children is our main focus, we are also planning an outdoor classroom, as well as a community garden & walking track for everyone to enjoy.

During Scallop Days on Saturday from 10am - 4pm, we will have a booth set up across from the post office & will be selling tickets on a print by Poppy Balser, seafood donated by Brock Longmire and a whale watch tour donated by Amy & Craig Theriault. Water, pop & giant suckers will be available at the booth as well. Also, members will be selling freezies near the House of Wong on Water Street, across from the Wright Cut (barber shop) and near Pharmasave on Warwick Street during the Scallop Days parade.
So come on out, buy a ticket, something cold & support our project!

BBQ

The Digby Branch of Grant Thornton will be holding a bbq on Wednesday, July 28th on the boardwalk in Digby, across from Scotiabank, with all proceeds going towards our project. The bbq will be held from 11:30 am to 1:30pm. Hotdogs, sausages & pop will be served.
This is an great example on how businesses can help with our project.
Thanks Grant Thornton!

Donors

This week, committe members were given brochures of our project and are now going out into the community to approach potential donors regarding our project. We are anticipating a lot of support, as not only are we planning on building a playground, but an outdoor classroom, garden & a walking track, that can be enjoyed by everyone in our community. Some businesses have already contibuted towards our project before being approached as they realize its importance in the community.

WHAT A WEEK!

Wow, what a week this was for the Keith Trimper Memorial Playground!
On Monday, a cheque in the amount of $1,500 was given to the committee to put towards the cost of the playground as part of the Community Wellness Fund.

Thank you Digby & Area Community Health Board!

On Saturday, the committee held a fundraiser for the playground at DES where there was a yard sale, facepainting, BBQ, games for the kids, raffles on a print by Poppy Balser & seafood provided by Brock Longmire, and a bouncy kingdom.

Over $1,800 was raised!

Also at the fundraiser, the Digby Lions presented us with a cheque to cover the cost of a swingset with an accessible swing seat. Keith Trimper's mother & brother, Lisa & Brandon Trimper, were present, as well as the family of Dawson Drew, when head Lion Mary Anne McCormick presented playground committe chair, Sean Fredericks, with the cheque.
Thank you Digby Lions!
